Morihei Ueshiba
O’Sensei |
Aikido was
founded in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba O’Sensei. On the surface,
Aikido is a martial art concerned solely with self defence. Students learn immobilisation
techniques and throwing techniques to a wide variety of attacks, from the
front or from behind, with or without weapons, by one or many attackers.
Weapons training necessarily partners the open handed training and involves
the Aiki sword and staff. At its deeper
levels, Aikido is an holistic approach to physical, mental and spiritual
development. The self defence techniques, when studied correctly, provide
growth for the body, mind and soul. |
|
There are
different styles of Aikido. The Aikikai forms the umbrella certification body
and has always been headed by the founder’s family line. Soke Morihiro Saito
Sensei spent 23 years with the founder in Iwama as a live-in student or uchi
deshi and developed Iwama Style Aikido, also sometimes called Takemusu
Aikido. After O’Sensei’s
death on 26 April 1969, Morihiro Saito Sensei became the keeper of the Aiki
Shrine and continued as the chief instructor in the founder’s Iwama dojo. He
died on 13 May 2002, leaving some of his direct students to teach in
Australia, including Saburo Takayasu Sensei in Sydney and Michael Field
Sensei in Melbourne. |
